I turn to the surveillance cameras mounted twenty feet up on the walls and reach out to them with my inish. Exploring their workings, I discover they require codes to disable them, but I have a better way. Relying on my training with Harrow and Ronden, I use my inish to fuse the relays, conjuring a blackout. No alarm sounds; no warning is given. Eventually, someone will notice, but I can only hope they will think it a minor malfunction or mechanical failure of some sort, because on checking the motion detectors they will find no sign of activity. This is because I have disabled them, too.
They will not try to fix the cameras at night but will wait until morning when they can see better. They will wait because there is no apparent need for haste. At least, this is what I hope.
I step from the shadows with Ronden at my shoulder and walk to the door through which we will enter. It has a camera to identify those who seek admittance, but I have already disabled it along with the others. The locks on the door are formidable, but they can be released by entering a specific code on a keypad next to the door. I bypass all this through use of my inish to release the lock, and we are inside.
We stand in an entry portal that is sealed off from the rest of the prison. The Goblin sentry on the other side of a wall of protective glass frantically works buttons as he glances from one countertop screen to the next in an effort to find out why the exterior door has opened for no apparent reason. He does not look up right away, but when he does, I bring him down at once with a quick strike of disabling magic that passes right through the protective glass and renders him unconscious. I have learned a few things in my training, and determined possibilities for using a few more. This is one. I am much more capable than even a week ago, and I am immensely grateful for it.
I turn my attention to the locks on the doors leading out of the entry portal and into the control chamber and, using inish, once more release them. We pass from the entry portal into the control room and then are inside the prison. There we find a small storage room for replacement equipment. Ronden drags the sentry inside, closes the door as she exits, and I fuse the lock so it will not release.
Telling Ronden to stay where she is, I walk to the hallway and spy the cameras. They have to be disabled, but this second round will almost certainly draw unwanted attention. We will have to act fast from here on in. We are not all that far from where I believe Harrow is being held, so we should be able to reach him quickly. But even once we do, we will still not be clear of the prison wallsâand weâll be facing danger every second we remain inside.
